Weekly Insights
This week we invite ministry leaders to reflect upon new data around political preferences of young people and how these preferences connect to church life.
Where should the line be drawn between politics and religion, especially when working with young people? New data indicate that a majority of young people would prefer their churches to support progressive political beliefs. Furthermore, this research was conducted without reference to church background, so we might presume that the percentage of young people within mainline congregations that want churches to support progressive political beliefs is even higher (probably much more so than these national figures).
How can we as church leaders engage and support young people over politics and social justice issues, especially when there may be significant pushback in our congregations? What do the political proclivities of young people tell us about future directions for the church in its relationship to the political sphere? What might the Social Gospel look like for young people today?
